We bring together new voices and established artists to create new projects inspired by timeless stories that resonate across cultures and generations.

Headquartered in Stratford-upon-Avon our creative team comprises established, award-winning professionals from across the industry, bringing a wealth of experience from multiple countries and diverse work environments. This rich tapestry of backgrounds enables us to approach projects with a unique perspective, fostering innovative solutions that resonate globally. Additionally, we are committed to nurturing the next generation of talent through our mentorship and apprenticeship programme, providing young and emerging artists with opportunities to gain valuable experience and insight in real working environments, helping them establish their career paths in a supportive setting.
Our current animation projects span a spectrum of tone and emotion, from playful, visually rich short films that spark imagination and joy, to long-form documentary projects that explore the deeper complexities of human experience.
Alongside a limited series for television and streaming audiences in development, our teams delve into stories of resilience, choice, and connection, offering an empathetic lens on some of today’s most pressing realities.
Across every project, we’re driven by a commitment to storytelling that unites artistry with purpose. We believe that art and creativity is one of the best ways of revealing the beauty, humour, and strength that defines our shared humanity.

Our publishing projects bring new life to the stories we think we know and are already familiar with. Every page reinterprets shared myths and familiar narratives through distinctive voices and visual worlds.
From a graphic novel for older readers to a vibrant children’s series and an original comic line, each work invites readers to see the extraordinary within the everyday.
Developed by and for a broad community of readers, these stories celebrate the diversity of human experience, ensuring that everyone can find a reflection of themselves in the worlds we create.

Our game worlds are built for those who crave story, character, and choice.
From an original tabletop role-playing experience to an online adventure, our current projects in development immerse the players in richly imagined realms where decisions carry weight and every path reveals new dimensions of the story.
Set between the familiar and the fantastical, these games draw on timeless themes of conflict, destiny, and transformation. We are inviting players to step inside living narratives that challenge, surprise, and stay with them long after the game ends.

A distinctive visual voice: warm, imaginative, and resonant with young audiences
Someone collaborative, passionate, and ready to commit to a creative process

What you'll receive:
A paid illustration contract (compensation details shared with shortlisted applicants in early July)
Full publishing credit as the illustrator
A professionally published children's book in your portfolio
Creative support and guidance from the Familiar Shadow team throughout the project

Our merchandise and licensing partnerships extend the reach of our creative projects, bringing the art, imagery, and stories behind our work to new audiences around the world.
Through collaborations with select partners we develop thoughtfully designed products that celebrate the artists and narratives at the heart of our studio’s vision.
We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint, working with local and ethically minded suppliers to ensure that everything we make reflects our respect for both people and planet.
These creations are designed not only to showcase our collective artistry, but also to make the work of our collaborators more accessible, allowing audiences to engage with, celebrate, and carry a piece of the creativity that inspires them.

Our documentary projects explore the depths of human experience. These are stories of resilience, loss, and transformation told through the language of animation and music.
Each film is grounded in real lives and lived emotions: journeys through grief and endurance, courage and silence, love and survival.
One examines the unseen realities of global exploitation and the human cost that lies beneath it. Another reveals the intimate, often unspoken struggles of the body, choice, and identity tracing the strength found within pain and persistence. The third, a musical portrait, follows the rise and fall of an artist whose brilliance and vulnerability echo through his own compositions and the world he left behind.
Together, these works seek not only to illuminate difficult truths, but to find the beauty and humanity within them whilst creating space for empathy, reflection, and understanding.

Light and shadow are opposite sides of the same coin. We can illuminate our paths or darken our way. It is a matter of choice.
